...and I *still* can't get it to run... 2.4.9, that is. At least not how I thought it would. I will try to keep the odyssey to a minimum. I installed RedHat 6.0 as a second boot (after Win98) on my PC but was never happy with how it wouldn't recognize either my sound card (Turtle Beach/Aureal) or CD-RW (Sony 100). I replaced the sound card with a SBLive, and decided that I would have better luck all around if I upgraded the kernel. I read the HowTos. I downloaded all the supporting packages and installed them. I followed all the directions, and have been able to compile 2.4.9 several times. I now have the sound card working, and the CD-RW is identified in the SCSI chain (as stated in the HowTo)... but, I have lost PPP completely, I can't seem to get the system to actually recognize any CDs, I can't seem to manage loadable modules at all, AND the kernel now weighs in at 2.6Mb (previously, it was ~900k). When I reconfigure LILO, it says the kernel is too big. When I try to run kppp, it says that PPP is not available (although the dmesg shows PPP 2.4.1 executing at startup). I have configured the kernel with ppp both in the kernel and as a module, with no apparent change. I am quite frustrated, and I hope someone can help.
