NASA SLS Propulsion System Goes into Marshall Stand Ahead of Big Test Series

Engineers at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center installed a test version of the Space Launch System's interim cryogenic propulsion stage in a test stand this week. The ICPS will give NASA's Orion spacecraft the in-space push needed to fly beyond the moon before it returns to Earth on the first flight of SLS and Orion in late 2018.

New Crew Launches to Space Station to Continue Scientific Research

Three crew members representing the United States, Russia and France are on their way to the International Space Station after launching from Kazakhstan this week. Peggy Whitson of NASA, Oleg Novitskiy of Roscosmos and Thomas Pesquet of ESA are scheduled to dock with the space station Nov. 19.

'Layering' Up for the First Flight of NASA's Space Launch System

The diaphragm for the Orion stage adapter, which will join NASA's Orion spacecraft to the interim cryogenic propulsion stage of the Space Launch System, is coming together. The adapter diaphragm -- constructed of multiple layers of carbon fiber fabric material engrained with epoxy -- is used to keep launch vehicle gases away from the spacecraft.

Granddaughter of NASA Legend Katherine Johnson Visits Michoud

St. Peter Claver School's 7th grade science class visited NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility this week. The visit has a special tie to NASA -- Katherine "Michelle" Sanders, a teacher at the school, is the granddaughter of Katherine Johnson who is featured in the upcoming feature film, "Hidden Figures." Johnson, who was a teacher before working for NACA and NASA as a human computer, was presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom in November 2015.
