It works as intended, MPlayer does not do software scaling by default since it is just too slow and the graphics drivers you are using do not support any kind of acceleration. Or in other words: your graphics setup is completely broken for video. You can still use either -zoom or -vm if you really have no way to fix it (which would only be the case if there are no Linux graphics drivers for your card at all, except the generic VESA/SVGA/framebuffer one).
