I overcame that problem at the time by getting the NVIDIA driver. Now the same machine works very well with nouveau driver. Would you mind posting output from $ sudo lspci $ cat /proc/meminfo If your machine has an NVIDIA card, it might be best that you get nvidia driver. If it is via/openchrome, get an openchrome driver.
