When mplayer lists "subtitles", is it actually listing what would be referred to in DVD parlance as subpictures? Bear in mind that DVD subpictures may be used for things other than subtitles. Menu overlays are subpictures, strictly speaking. The "follow the white rabbit" thing on the famous Matrix DVD springs to mind. Some of these tracks may not be marked with a language because they do not contain linguistic data and this is most likely to occur in exactly the kind of elaborately-designed commercial discs associated with the popular movies people are citing as problematic. I'm not sure what to suggest as a strategy for avoiding this but there presumably is one as DVD players do it. P
