I guess mhonarc is a way to do this.
If I understand you correctly, you should get around
modifying mhonarc, too. Can't you just put filters onto
the 'blog' mailbox that filter to different folders
depending on the prject number in the subject? Then you
have one folder for each project, put that through mhonarc
and in the same pass you copy the files to the project
directory.

That way you can avoid hacking into mhonarc and all you need
is a little shell script and a few simple filters for your
mailbox.
