I ended up just using the standalone flashing utility (after backing up
my data) to update:
http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/maemo-dev-env-downloads.php
It works fine, but you'll have to restore afterward and do some
reconfiguration.

basically have to rely on most packagers putting things in the /opt
partition as opposed to the root file system.
