I also used my N900 two weeks without a SIM card. I also didn't notice this problem. But - I use now a very cheap 3G pre paid card which gives me 100MB for about 4€ in a month. This is really great, because I often use WLANs and 100MB are enough for me when I'm on the road.
Nice thing to check e-mails etc. if you are on the way - but it's not everytime family or WAF[1] compatible. :-)
