I am comparing it to the N810, which also has A-GPS to the best of my
knowledge. In that case, a fix IS possible (in the order of a couple of
minutes on a clear view of the sky) without network connection (WLAN
only, of course).

Suppose you're abroad and data connection means paying roaming charges:
in that case, easy money that you'd prefer NOT to connect just for
getting a GPS fix. Other scenarios are lack of coverage (fairly likely
even in Italy, let alone the US) and offline mode: when coming to
Amsterdam, I had quite some fun measuring the plane speed with my N810
and that wouldn't have been possible with a N900 insisting on cell
connection.
