Either that (though I don't think it's the best approach right now) or 
install mer in an sd card.

No, they won't. Mer has its own repositories (with not a lot of software 
available right now). It can also use ubuntu repositories, though, 
unfortunately, software that has not been hildonised will have some 
difficulty in running properly.

If you install to an sd card, you can dual boot (i.e. keep both diablo 
and mer) and try for yourself.
I personally think that mer still has a long way to go but it looks very 
promising.
