The device itself can probably read FAT12, FAT16 and FAT32 fle systems as this support is pretty standard in Linux - they may even be standard kernel module(s) as so many storage devices use FAT. So, it's not a limitation of the OS - just a slightly brain dead File Manager application (specifically: the Format option!)
