I had the same problem with Orange in the UK. I think the issue has now been 
fixed in recent revisions of the OS. You can download the latest version from 
www.nokia.com/770 and follow the support link.

I found the problem was the dial string was incorrect for Orange and is set to 
something like *99***1# when it should be *99#

You can change this in the connection settings if you delve deep enough. 
I can however confirm the latest OS which I installed today works correctly 
with my Sony Ericsson K700i.
