Actually your comment made me think.

I am running Sourcemage Linux(I am one of the developers) and we use
devfs mounted on /devices with symlinks from /dev.

After I created a symlink from /dev/mass (the vg) that pointed to
/devices/mass (the actual device) all was well.

Glenn,

I guess you are not using devfs and your /dev/ nodes for the
LVM devices might be wrong.

Please run "vgmknodes;vgchange -ay" and retry to create your LV in VG
"mass".

BTW: you should better try LVM2 (our new development code base)
rather than
     LVM1.1, which has been an interim development version. In case
you need
     to stick with version 1, please take the recent 1.0.5 production
version.
