Martin, based on the error (vgscan -- ERROR "lv_read_all_lv(): number of LV" can't get data of volume group "vg1" from physical volume(s)), it looks like vgscan counts a different number rather than 1 LV scanning the on-disk table of LV structures. Could you send the output of "vgscan -d" to me in private email (mge@sistina.com) and attach the file Martin_md0.vgda you created with "dd if=/dev/md0 of=Martin_md0.vgda bs=1k count=1024" as well for further investigation.
