Tom, you seem to have hit the gcc 2.96 or similar optimizer bug. Please regenerate the LVM software *without* optimization (change "-O2" to "-O0" in the configure script;run "make distclean"; run "./configure;make;make install"). With regard to PVs displayed as "NOT available": they simply belong to a not activated volume group and hence have that status.
