compatible with X86_32 and X86_64

Hello all,
I am a kernelnewbie, and I want to contribut ot linux.
I want to know whether there is a kerenl beening compiled to compatilbe 
with both X86_32 and X86_64?

How can I run a application ,compliled in X86_32 , on X86_64 Linux System? 


Any help would be appreciate.
