NAK, there is a whole point for doing it this way: I need to track
exactly what is released. I can't debug stuff when everyone and their
cousin generates the scripts themselves with an insane combination of
versions of autoconf, automake and whatnot.

If you use the git tree and modify the scripts, you are assumed to know
what you are doing. Otherwise, just don't touch them.
