mount reports the following:

/dev/sdb1 on /media/littlun type vfat
(rw,nosuid,nodev,uid=1000,gid=1000,shortname=mixed,dmask=0077,utf8=1,showexec,flush,uhelper=udisks)

Nothing shows up in syslog during transfers.

One thing I hadn't tried until a moment ago was an fs other than
fat32.  Same issue occurs with ext4.
