This sounds quite odd. I'm opening and closing the device for thousands
of iterations here without any problems.

Can you reproduce it using another USB-serial device or serial port? On
another host?

Would be interesting to see those. So you're able to reproduce with
debugging enabled?

Can you reproduce it on a vanilla kernel?
