Gotta love Google. The MyBook most likely carries an Initio INIC-3607. This is the USB3 follow-on to the INIC-1607E, but is virtually undocumented on the public web. All other Initio controllers sport 8051 CPUs, and unimaginative extrapolation indicates the 3607 does as well. http://www.initio.com.tw/Html/Products.asp So I like the theory of an 8051 bug present in some common embedded toolkit code.
