Gotta love Google.

The MyBook most likely carries an Initio INIC-3607.

This is the USB3 follow-on to the INIC-1607E, but
is virtually undocumented on the public web.

All other Initio controllers sport 8051 CPUs,
and unimaginative extrapolation indicates the
3607 does as well.

So I like the theory of an 8051 bug present
in some common embedded toolkit code.  Doesn't
rule-out a WD-specific drive firmware
interaction.
