I'll do my best. It's a long time since I've compiled a kernel. I
believe I have narrowed it down though. By using the archive of kernel
builds for Ubuntu, I've established that I'm OK with 2.6.37 up to final
release, including subsequent Ubuntu patches. The problem occurs in a
kernel based on 2.6.38-rc1.

Obviously I realise you don't support vendor kernels so I need to try
and build vanilla kernels and find where the problem arose.
