the basic idea sounds fine to me, and the actual implementation put
forth in these patches looks sane

I made the updates you asked but compile tested only. Today has been
quite hactic for me. Need to run out of the PC for a while, then I'll
come back and test. Pushed the updated patches to the same branch.
