It was still worth a try.

There's something else you can also try.  Make sure CONFIG_DEBUG_FS and 
CONFIG_USB_MON are enabled, and capture a usbmon trace showing what 
happens when the program fails.  Instructions are in the kernel source 
file Documentation/usb/usbmon.txt.
