The curious thing is that /sys/bus/usb/devices/1-5 is still 100% active according to powertop. Trying to load the driver shows this: [root@xpsm1210 ~]# modprobe -v snd_usb_audio insmod /lib/modules/2.6.34-0.28.rc3.git3.willy.fc14.i686.PAE/kernel/sound/core/snd-rawmidi.ko insmod /lib/modules/2.6.34-0.28.rc3.git3.willy.fc14.i686.PAE/kernel/sound/usb/snd-usb-lib.ko insmod /lib/modules/2.6.34-0.28.rc3.git3.willy.fc14.i686.PAE/kernel/sound/usb/snd-usb-audio.ko and it blocks there permanently, but it seems the driver gets loaded (the hardware does not seem to work, though): [root@xpsm1210 ~]# lsmod | grep usb snd_usb_audio 101221 1 snd_usb_lib 14407 1 snd_usb_audio snd_rawmidi 16449 1 snd_usb_lib snd_hwdep 4912 2 snd_usb_audio,snd_hda_codec snd_pcm 62103 3 snd_usb_audio,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec snd 47575 15 snd_usb_audio,snd_usb_lib,snd_rawmidi,snd_hda_codec_idt,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_hwdep,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_pcm,snd_timer btusb 12724 0 bluetooth 75977 5 rfcomm,sco,bnep,l2cap,btusb After two minutes I get the following in the log: kernel: INFO: task modprobe:2072 blocked for more than 120 seconds. kernel: "echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message. kernel: modprobe D eeb71c74 6564 2072 1997 0x00000080 kernel: eeb71c84 00200046 00000000 eeb71c74 c0c29fc0 c0c29fc0 c0c29fc0 c0c29fc0 kernel: eeb482a4 c0c29fc0 c0c29fc0 e3d3ad0a 00000044 00000000 00000044 eeb48000 kernel: 00000001 fb0e5fd0 eeb48000 fb0e5fd4 eeb71cc4 c07cb8a9 00000000 00000000 kernel: Call Trace: kernel: [<c07cb8a9>] __mutex_lock_common+0x1f2/0x30a kernel: [<c07cba6e>] mutex_lock_nested+0x35/0x3d kernel: [<fb0ddda2>] ? snd_usb_autoresume+0x1d/0x3d [snd_usb_audio] kernel: [<fb0ddda2>] snd_usb_autoresume+0x1d/0x3d [snd_usb_audio] kernel: [<fb0dfea6>] get_ctl_value+0x29/0xdc [snd_usb_audio] kernel: [<fb0e0207>] get_min_max+0x70/0x251 [snd_usb_audio] kernel: [<fb0e093b>] ? build_feature_ctl+0x6e/0x351 [snd_usb_audio] kernel: [<fb0e09e2>] build_feature_ctl+0x115/0x351 [snd_usb_audio] kernel: [<fb0e199d>] parse_audio_unit+0x7d4/0x855 [snd_usb_audio] kernel: [<c04df917>] ? __slab_alloc+0x6b/0x3d7 kernel: [<fb0e1e65>] snd_usb_create_mixer+0x161/0x56e [snd_usb_audio] kernel: [<fb0df94b>] usb_audio_probe+0x7dd/0x7fe [snd_usb_audio] kernel: [<c06c530c>] usb_probe_interface+0x13b/0x1e2 kernel: [<c067544b>] driver_probe_device+0xca/0x1d2 kernel: [<c067559b>] __driver_attach+0x48/0x64 kernel: [<c0674a32>] bus_for_each_dev+0x42/0x6c kernel: [<c0675239>] driver_attach+0x19/0x1b kernel: [<c0675553>] ? __driver_attach+0x0/0x64 kernel: [<c0674cc1>] bus_add_driver+0x101/0x24a kernel: [<c0675806>] driver_register+0x81/0xe8 kernel: [<c05d02f6>] ? __raw_spin_lock_init+0x28/0x4e kernel: [<c06c502d>] usb_register_driver+0x79/0x11c kernel: [<fb0ef000>] ? snd_usb_audio_init+0x0/0x36 [snd_usb_audio] kernel: [<fb0ef034>] snd_usb_audio_init+0x34/0x36 [snd_usb_audio] kernel: [<c040306c>] do_one_initcall+0x62/0x170 kernel: [<c04743b5>] sys_init_module+0xae/0x1e9 kernel: [<c0408b1f>] sysenter_do_call+0x12/0x38 kernel: INFO: lockdep is turned off.
