After logging into gnome powertop said that the /sys/bus/usb/devices/1-5 usb device was active 100% of the time, but the device was not working, going to the sound preferences in gnome didn't show the input device (microphone) listed as it normally would. This is very odd. I had expected a kernel message. Please boot with the audio driver blacklisted.
