Shouldn't ttyGS* behave the same as any other serial port?  Is there 
some way in which it doesn't?

Perhaps by looking at the module parameters for the gserial driver.  Or 
perhaps by being the user who loaded the gserial module in the first 
place.

But I'm not the best person to ask since I know very little about 
gserial.  You'd be better off asking the people responsible for it.
