Then maybe the reader does want to receive a "load" command. You can use the sg_start program from the sg3_utils package to send this command. You should start usbmon, then insert the card, then run sg_start -l /dev/sdb The load command should show up in the usbmon log. Let's see if it convinces the reader to look for the card. If it doesn't work then there's a good possibility your card reader is simply broken.
