I now found out that the device ID in the kernel message
  usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 13 if 0 
does not correlate with the directory in /sys/bus/usb (which I was sure that it
did, some time ago!), but that it gets the (lowest free) number 2 ...

After fixing the udev rules I got that working again.
