The 7 port hub that I have is actually a pair of 4-port hubs chained 
together.  There are 3 external ports on the first hub, the 4th goes to the 
second hub.  All 4 ports on the second hub go to connectors.

You might learn something by using one of the 3 ports that go to the first 
hub so there is only one hub in the data path.  lsusb -t will draw you a 
picture.  Just move a widget from port to port and see where it moves on the 
picture.
