You can disable usb all-together but telling it to ignore a single
device lasts only until the next reset. Then vmware will connect it
again. Maybe the full VMware workstation is better, this is only the
VMware player on Linux.

I have a better long term solution that I've just started; debugging
avrdude to figuring out why it has problems with the particular Atmel
MCU I am using. Then I'll be free of VMWare.
