USB is a message passing bus so you need a USB capable micro-controller
board the other end. There are a variety of cheap single chip solutions
for that plus little USB/serial convertors such as the CP2102.

The robotics market also flogs a wide range of possibly useful devices of
this kind. Ask google for "USB servo controller" and you'll find a whole
range of USB widgets.
