I have had a lot of contact with Alan and in the end I managed to
test this on:
2.6.28-4-generic #11-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 16 21:50:52 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
where the problem has ceased to exist.

My only issue is that I would rather have it working on a patch of
2.6.27-9-generic #1 SMP Thu Nov 20 22:15:32 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux
at least until I find a way of getting fglrx working with latest kernel.

Problem is of course to patch 2.6.27-9 when not knowing what was broken.
