Could you just confirm that the device was bound to new driver by taking
a look at dmesg. It should read something like:

[   77.106964] usb_serial_simple 1-2.4:1.0: novatel_gps converter detected
[   77.113403] usb 1-2.4: novatel_gps converter now attached to ttyUSB0
[   77.117218] usb 1-2.4: novatel_gps converter now attached to ttyUSB1
[   77.119812] usb 1-2.4: novatel_gps converter now attached to ttyUSB2

when you plug the device in.

Also, did you verify all three ports?
