That's somewhat beyond my control. I'm logged in remotely to a system which 
doesn't belong to me but which is where the device is. It's also a holiday 
there, so, even if the owner is willing to upgrade it, that won't be possible 
for a few days.

I removed the clear halt and the same (ETIME) problem is still there. Now there 
are just 5ms between the start of the bulk transfer and the reported error.

Since it does work on Windows, I kind of doubt it.
