There is also another patch pending (please refer to http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-usb/msg104986.html) which uses cdc_acm for the PPP/modem interface. This patch is only for left-over interfaces for AT port, diagnostic and NMEA parts which are simple serial interfaces. As Oliver already pointed out, this patch needs to be refined to only use those interfaces with usb-serial-simple.
