Perhaps the printer is sending some status bytes that we shouldn't pass
to user space. Could you provide a log from when you send a command and
get a response while running with debugging enabled? You can enable
debugging with

	echo "module usbserial +p" >/sys/kernel/debug/dynamic_debug/control
