0b95:1790 [Asus N55SF] Bad performance of Ethernet-to-USB device on USB3 port, dmesg flooded with errors

[2.] Full description of the problem/report:

Plugging USB-to-Ethernet device ID 0b95:1790 ASIX Electronics Corp. in USB3 port yields slow performance, dmesg flooded with errors. Plugging on USB2 port, exact same situation otherwise, always works well. Bug is reproducible roughly 3 out of 4 attempts. Every time the bug didn't occur on a USB3 port, the device was recognized as "high-speed" (USB2) instead of "SuperSpeed" (USB3) though it was plugged in a USB3 port.

Among of the most common error message in dmesg are:
ax88179_178a 9-1:1.0 eth2: kevent 4 may have been dropped
ax88179_178a 9-1:1.0 eth2: ax88179 - Link status is: 1

Reproduced on two different machines including all the details above. Machines are:
* ASUS N55SF laptop, Intel CPU, kernel Linux 3.13.0 64-bit.
* SMT-FOX-NTA3500-BL (or foxconn-nt-a3500 ?), kernel Linux 3.13.0 32-bit.
Both machines have USB2 and USB3 ports.

### When working (USB2 port)
* Ethernet auto-negotiation is fast
* mii-tool is fast (typical 0.05s)
* few lines in dmesg
* good performance

### When failing (USB3 port, device recognized as SuperSpeed)
* Ethernet auto-negotiation fails, then eventually works (after a minute or so). * mii-tool is often slow (10s of seconds instead of 0.05s) but sometimes fast * DHCP eventually completes (after about 30 seconds) when applicable, then Ethernet works.
* "ifconfig" and "ip addr list" slow like mii-tool.
* Unplugging-plugging the cable yields another slow auto-negotiation round.



Except when noted, all details below are from the second machine.

Bug was first observed on 3.11 and reproduced on 3.12 series kernels.

Bug was also tested on older kernels (3.5.0 and 3.8.0) but device is simply not recognized because driver was included only from 3.9.

* Workaround : plug the device on a USB2 port. Performance may be reduced (not measured).

* Note : bug reported first on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1269883 where The Ubuntu Bug Control team asked me to report here. Downstream bug report first focused on the first machine so has extra info there.
