I just tried mounting w/ xino=off but everything still behaves the same.

Kernel config help for this sounded like something good, plus the
Ubuntu 18.04 kernels all have this set (or did, when I checked last
year).

Thanks, Amir.  I didn't have CONFIG_DYNAMIC_DEBUG enabled, so
recompiling with that and without CONFIG_OVERLAY_FS_XINO_AUTO to see
