Re: Using console text editors with Speakup

Hi again James: Yes that was the speakup list you asked on. I believe
we are having this conversation off the list or my filter is catching
these messages before being sifted to the list.

I don't use vi so can't answer your question. about that. There are
lots of vi users though so maybe someone else will have a suggestion.

I don't really have much to do with the daily up keep or modification
of speakup. There are very many new and talented users which have
taken over that role. I am mostly a sideline kibitzer these days if
anything.

I will Cc this reply back to the list so hopefully someone else will
answer your vi question

Hi Kirk

Thanks for the pointers. I may be being dense here, but I thought this was the Speakup mailing list, or are there several You have all been extremely helpful thus far, so thank you.

VIM is still being problematic with Speakup. I am unable to navigate up and ddown using J and K,. The arrow keys seem to work though. A fantastic Screen Reader, thank you for all of your hard work.

Best wishes

James

Hello James: No I don't know of any documentation specifically aimed
at text editors. The only documentation there really is is the speakup
users guide on the web site. I'm sure there's a manual for emacspeak
but I've never looked at it. There is extended documentation for emacs
itself though, which you can access with the 'c-h t' and 'c-h i'
commands from inside emacs. c-h t is an emacs tutorial.

The speakup mailing list is a very good resource for most queries and
the folks are quite helpful.

Good luck.

Hi Kirk

Thank you for the warm welcome and the advice. Do you know of any setup guides to using Speakup with text editors such as Emacs or VI please?

I hope to be able to contribute to this list at some point.

Best wishes and thanks again

James

Hello James: Welcome to linux and speakup. Pretty much all of the
editors work with speakup although with varying levels of
accessibility. Vi is a favourite and Samuel has mentioned the
configuration change to make it work better. I myself use emacs and
find it works very well although I find silencing the status line
helps a lot. The simple editors also work but have different
foibles. There is also emacspeak wich is T.V. Ramans emacs speech
interface which I understand works quite nicely.

Enjoy.

Hello

I am not sure if this is the right forum to ask this question, so apologies if not. Please feel free to point me to the correct place. But here goes.

I am quite a new or should I say casual Linux user. I am currently using the latest LTS of Ubuntu running in a VM. After days of searching and tinkering, I finally have Speakup working. Yay! I am really impressed with it, so thank you.

Could anyone please give me some pointers on using VI or VIM or some other console editor with Speakup please? When I navigate using the VIM key bindings, Speakup either does not respond, or does so intermittently. Am I missing something that I should have set?

I am quite comfortable moving around the filesystem, having been an OS X user for over ten years and doing a lot of command line work in that time.

Thank you

Best

James
