There's an ncurses option to qemu that starts the KVM guest with its console
directed to the terminal in which you're running kvm. Note that this also
provides access to the Grub prompt of the guest system.

You can also configure networking on the guest to enable ssh access from the
host (or from elsewhere). If you have an IPv6 network it's especially
convenient.
