debian, orca

spHello all,
I have a debian system which I've been using for a while with emacs. I"m
managing to figure out most stuff on the CLI, but I'd really like
XWindows to fall back on for a messenger.

So I had a few questions, hopefully mostly related.
1. Any good solutions for installing gnome, assuming that's only what
debian works with? I can grab it from packages, but there are a lot of
versions. Is there a recommended dummy package?
2. Any good ideas for orca? Last time I installed gnome, I had no
desktop from what I could tell and orca could only work on the start menu.
3. Can I disable it from running at login so I just need to type startx?
How do people handle espeakup at that point, or even speakup?

Thanks,

Take care,
Ty
