vim and speakup

I've actually never known a time when I'd hear the character spoken when I
backspaced.  It worked before?  Was there some setting for it that recently
stopped working?  Thanks!

I am also seeing this problem. It cropped up fairly recently, I believe.
I don't know a solution. I do note that spaces are announced, but not
alphanumerics.
