I think it was pretty slow as I recall, but XFS was able to eventually read the backup image after running xfs_repair on it. Since it works like dd, you can rescue a drive to a raw disk image if you want. I highly recommend it. Unlike the normal dd, it gives progress reports so you can see how many bad sectors it found and how long it will take.
