Speakup on the raspberry pi?

I have a raspberry pi board, which I just got a week ago.

I was wondering if anyone has gotten speakup working on this board? I've been
trying so much to get it working without success..
I even attempted to compile the kernel (3.6), by including speakup from the git
source, but it resulted in compilation errors. I'm wondering if this is due to a
kernel mismatch (speakup not being designed for the 3.6 kernel). I really wish
the pi devs would just include this in their sources, but I guess the blind
isn't their priority.

Anyway. For now I'm just trying to get speakup_soft to work under arm and
somehow get speech. Orca won't speak either, so I'm not sure what's up, but I
would love to see any feedback on this.

Thanks,
Tomi
