using dd tfor backups

Hi,
Another option that might work is using pv in addition to, or instead of 
dd.  For example you could do:
pv /dev/sda >/mnt/backup.bin

Note that doing a backup this way is going to take quite a while, 
depending on the size and speed of the devices involved.
