Another option is the IBM viavoice speakup connector which will work with voxin. Regarding the speechd-up deprecation, I don't know whether freebsoft intend to create a replacement or if they were just dropping support for it. I know that when opentts was being created they were going to continue with a fork of speechd-up, so may be someone will take up development of speechd-up.
