Question about characters in speakup

If the codes for these chars are 336, and 368, then they aren't ASCII,
they're UDF8. Having said that, I don't believe speakup has full UDF8
support, though I stand to be corrected on that, especially since I
seem to recall reading something about internationalization on this
list a while back.
