NUL with cat

Hello,
This maybe a little off topic so feel free to respond privately. I am
trying to test a doubletalk speech synthesizer using the cat command.
 From the discussions forum from the apple website I was told that,
$ echo $'\00' | cat
would append a NUL character to the cat command? I wanted cat to
append a NUL character at the end of a listing? I found out that my
synthesizer needs a NUL character to speak. Like when I ran cat with
nothing after it if I typed text, I wouldn't get any audio output. But
if I ended the text with NUL my synthesizer would speak the text. So I
am trying to append a NUL character to the cat command? But I can't
seem to get the line from the apple website working? Any help would be
appreciated.
