Just out of idle curiosity, do you have a ~/.asoundrc file?  I had one,
and I wasted way too many hours of my life fighting with it.  I had
some of the ALSA issues that you describe, and they went away when
I deleted ~/.asoundrc.

As an aside, you might consider using /dev/synth for your talking cron
scripts.  This is doubly advantageous.  If you ever decide to go back
to using a hardware synthesizer, your scripts will speak through it.
