I guess it creates a file? No, there should be a file there by that name, and it sets a value in that file. Try this as root: cat /sys/module/speakup/parameters/direct The output should be 0 or 1. Also, get the output of this command: cat /sys/module/speakup/parameters/version and let us know what that output is.
